The artist Jean Le Gac created several paintings paying tribute to influential female figures of the twentieth century, including Agatha Christie, Françoise Sagan, Catherine Miller, and Coco Chanel.
It is the latter—an icon of elegance—that we have chosen to focus on. The houndstooth-patterned chairs, so emblematic of Chanel’s universe, were taken from the artist’s own living room and playfully associated with her portrait. By preserving period furniture, the reconstruction of the painting’s setting recreates a true time capsule. The artist further enriches the composition with handwritten notes and sketches scattered across a vintage vanity.
In the end, are we being invited into Madame Chanel’s intimacy, or into Le Gac’s painting studio?
A portrait is never truly neutral; it inevitably bears the imprint of the artist who conceives it.
